these witches don't burn // isabel sterling

"because, I'm standing here, telling you how much you hurt me, and you can't hear it. you broke my heart, and you didn't even notice. How can I trust you to put the pieces back together?"

Hannah's a witch, but not the kind you're thinking of. She's the real deal, an Elemental with the power to control fire, earth, water, and air. But even though she lives in Salem, Massachusetts, her magic is a secret she has to keep to herself. If she's ever caught using it in front of a Reg (read: non-witch), she could lose it. For good. So, Hannah spends most of her time avoiding her ex-girlfriend (and fellow Elemental Witch) Veronica, hanging out with her best friend, and working at the Fly by Night Cauldron selling candles and crystals to tourists, goths, and local Wiccans.

But dealing with her ex is the least of Hannah's concerns when a terrifying blood ritual interrupts the end-of-school-year bonfire. Evidence of dark magic begins to appear all over Salem, and Hannah's sure it's the work of a deadly Blood Witch. The issue is, her coven is less than convinced, forcing Hannah to team up with the last person she wants to see: Veronica.

While the pair attempt to smoke out the Blood Witch at a house party, Hannah meets Morgan, a cute new ballerina in town. But trying to date amid a supernatural crisis is easier said than done, and Hannah will have to test the limits of her power if she's going to save her coven and get the girl, especially when the attacks on Salem's witches become deadlier by the day.

THOUGHTS
(before i get started, i should note that book 51 was a re-read and just like the first time, I LOVED IT!)

this was another IG made me do it because some girl i used to follow put up a quote that i really liked so i put it on my tbr list. and then it went on sale for my nook so i got it AND THEN! i saw that the second book came out so i got them both from the library just so i could take a picture of a physical book lol *gasps for air*

i really did like this story.
its cheesy in the best way possible and i really liked that the author took her time to be so proper about the way she spoke about other sexes. in the sense that there is a scene of a couple with a kid and instead of assuming that the kid is either sex, the child is just acknowledged as they. its small but it means a lot because we've gone on so long assuming. i also liked that Hannah apologized after she assumed something about someone else. she wasn't stuck up about it and accepted her mistake. that's something i really liked about this book; the way that communication is all inclusive. (i understand that some might find something wrong with it and if that's the case, i am all ears because i am here to understand and never to judge).

once again (and what is going on with this!?) i kinda saw who it was....i kinda faltered a bit but once it came true i was like oookay! i can see how it happens. not mad at all that i caught on. and now i'm really interested in seeing how book 2 plays out which i am jumping into right after i write all this down.

so the point of the story is that they need to catch the bad guys. the synopsis states that Hannah and her ex Veronica team up to kick ass but that's a little far off. its more like Hannah is always rescuing Veronica in a way. aaaalllso, now that i caught on to the title i keep thinking about how clever it all is. i didn't see the meaning behind it until the end. (duh! les! lol) but yea....back to that. Hannah goes through some shit in this book.
physical, emotional, mental...this girl goes through it all.
i was a super sad when that one thing happens (ill spoil it at the bottom like always) but i understand that given the shit storm they are in something like that had to happen to iduno, give more validity to the story i guess.

honestly, once i got to the end the story made me a bit sad.
i know its made up and all a figment of the authors imagination but the reason that it made me sad is because well, the bad guys want them dead because of their powers. they claim that they way they live is an abomination to human kind....and while they are talking about witches in the book (hey, if you are a witch and they are real, more power to you. i ain't no one to tell you anything!) it just kinda hit close to home given the shit storm that the world is going through rn. im glad things are being brought to light. im glad we are fighting the fight for BLM. im glad we are standing up but (and as stupid as it sounds) this book made me realize that like "what the fuck are we as humans doing?" why does anyone think they have higher authority over anyone else? i cannot, will not tell anyone else how to live their lives so why do others think they can.
anyway, yea....that feeling came up and it made me sad. but i wont give up hope. it might not happen in my lifetime but i hope we reach a point in the future where future generations can move forward with peace and love and that hatred has no place in any part of that world.
phew.

anyway, yea....ahh!.
that got all feel-y a bit there.

so yea, i liked this read, im excited to jump into book 2 and see how this one closes out. according to something i read online this is only a duology so lets hope it ends there.

i kinda got Sabrina the teenage witch vibes (the netflix one) but more....not so dark so if you like that show, you might like this read.
check it out!

i do have some questions about some plots in this story but i'm hoping to see them being answered or more talked about in book 2. hopefully they're covered.

jump over for spoilers!
thanks for reading!

Hannah is at a school party in the woods with Gemma her best friend when she hears a scream. it turns out to be Savannah (Veronica's friend). it turns out that she saw a fire and thought there was another smaller party going on but when she went to go look someone had burned a pentagram and sacrificed a raccoon causing her to slip on its blood and mess up her wrist. Hannah and Veronica rush to her aid and more of the party carries over. the dude Nolan who threw the party was pissed and picked a fight with the emo kid, Ethan right next to the fire so Veronica panicked and used her powers to put out the fire faster. she thought no one noticed...buuuuttt.......

they go to a party at Nolans house where Hannah asked Veronica to help her with some truth stones so she could question Ethan because she thought he was the witch hunter. turns out that he did create the scene at the forest party BUT he did it because he wanted to punish his father for up and leaving him and his mother, cleaning out their savings leaving them struggling and running away with his 20 something y/o secretary. he was just a human messing with dark energy. hannah feels guilty but i mean, she cant do shit about it. (later on you find out that his dad gets in a bad accident and Ethan does feel guilty but other than that scene he's never brought back so who knows what happens afterwards with his dad.)

anyway, at this party after the thing with Ethan, she's in the kitchen (actually, this might have happened before, i forget) when she finds Gemma who then brings Morgan around. turns out Morgan is new to town and she's bisexual. there's chemistry and they kiss (Hannah feels bad because she's not sure if Morgan did it because she wanted to or because the stones made her do it) anyway, they're kissing, Nolan comes around and records them, they ask him to delete it, he says no but then Benton comes around and makes him do it. (benton is another class mate who at the bonfire had actually asked Hannah out even though he knew she is a lesbian. he tells her it was a prank on Savannah's part but you later on learns that's a lie).
the party continues and then out of nowhere there is a fire.
everyone rushes out and that's when Hannah notices that Benton is actually stuck in the second floor right in the thick of it.
she runs in to save him.
she uses her powers to put out the fire. (veronica has previously messed with it to get her and Savannah to safety.)

anyway, yea, that happens.
Hannah ends up getting arrested.

Han and Morgan are on their first date when she keeps getting calls from Veronica. she finally answers and it turns out that the witch hunter is actually after her. Han apologizes and goes to Veronica's aid.
to make up for leaving her on their date, Han goes to some rehearsal thing with Gemma because Morgan was going to be there. Morgan forgives her and everything is good.
Morgan goes home with her father and Han gives Gemma a ride home. only to have the witch hunter crash into her car repeatedly to the point of killing her until Han manages to break the divider leading them to fall into the river. she thinks they'll be able to escape but Gemma's leg is stuck so Han has to use her powers to get her out. Gemma might be hurt but she sees it all happen.
there's no denying it and in the end even though Witches can never tell Reg's their secrets, Gemma knows so Han just tells her. her part only. not about all witches.

the next disaster takes place when Han and Morgan finally go on their second date. on their way back to Hannah's house, they realize that her home is on fire.
her dad was home. and in the end, her father ends up passing away. he should have been able to stop the fire but because they knocked him unconscious, he was easily overpowered by the fire.
while in the hospital before her dad passes away, Han learns that Morgan is actually a Blood Witch. Everything that Han has been taught to "hate". turns out that Morgan is actually a pretty good witch.
and it turns out that Morgan was able to piece it together that Han was a witch herself because she was doing a very horrible job of hiding her powers. Morgan actually confronts her right there in her dad's room and for a quick second you get the feeling that Morgan is actually going to take Han out but it all works out. Gemma ends up finding out too and now she's all bummed that she's a regular muggle. lol

so yea, her father passes away, she stays with Gemma...Morgan shows up and then they agree that they are all going to work on catching the witch hunter...when she gets a message from Veronica that they hunter is actually after her in her home rn. she's already worked up so she takes off to Veronica's to go after the witch hunter herself.
Morgan & Gemma protest but she overpowers them and given what takes place next, its a good thing she didnt bring them along.

so yes, she goes to Veronica's but she's late. all she sees is Savannah tied up. Savannah cant really give much detail but she does remember seeing the Delta tattoo on the dudes arm. that's when Hannah pieces who the hunter is. its actually Benton. (makes a lot of sense in the story and this is who i originally thought was the bad dude) she goes to his mansion, fucks his shit up but he ends up overpowering her and in the end, he ends up trying to burn them at the stake. he manages to put them up and light them up BUT These Witches Dont Burn. ahhahahahahaha i loved that!

in the end, the coven ends up rescuing them and sending Benton to jail for a long time (or at least starting to) and it ends with Hannah knowing that a big battle is about to start.

obvs there is a lot i left out like Veronica trying to get back with Hannah or the reason they broke up or the fact that Hannah walked in on Veronica and Savannah having sex even after Veronica gave her shit for going out on 1 date or the fact that the main goddess witch lady dude is actually Hannah's grama....and lots of other bits. but still...i gave you the gist of it all.
off to book 2!!!!!
