in five years // rebecca serle

"You mistake love. You think it has to have a future in order to matter, but it doesn't. It's the only thing that does not need to become at all. It only matters insofar as it exists. Here. Now. Love doesn't require a future."

SYNOPSIS
When Type-A Manhattan lawyer Dannie Cohan is asked this question at the most important interview of her career, she has a meticulously crafted answer at the ready. Later, after nailing her interview and accepting her boyfriend's marriage proposal, Dannie goes to sleep knowing she is right on track to achieve her five-year plan.

But when she wakes up, she’s suddenly in a different apartment, with a different ring on her finger, and beside a very different man. The television news is on in the background, and she can just make out the scrolling date. It’s the same night—December 15—but 2025, five years in the future.

After a very intense, shocking hour, Dannie wakes again, at the brink of midnight, back in 2020. She can’t shake what has happened. It certainly felt much more than merely a dream, but she isn’t the kind of person who believes in visions. That nonsense is only charming coming from free-spirited types, like her lifelong best friend, Bella. Determined to ignore the odd experience, she files it away in the back of her mind.

That is, until four-and-a-half years later, when by chance Dannie meets the very same man from her long-ago vision.

THOUGHTS
I LOVED The Dinner List when i read it last year, easily my top fave so of course when this one came out I had to have it. in 1 book Rebecca Serle became an auto buy/read author.

the synopsis does a good job breaking down this book for you. the only thing I would disagree with a little bit would be the "she files it for 4.5 years." but other than that, pretty close.

for once, I kinda knew what i was getting myself into.
sorta.
and everyone on bookstagram either loves it or thinks it's okay so while I knew, I also didn't really know. and I avoided spoilers, er, well I didnt look for them so I knew a bit but I went in completely blind

and O M G !!!!

I truly, truly liked this story.
easily a one sitting read and I would've kept going had I not needed to go to bed cus work. I'm not sure why I waited so long to read it but I'm guessing maybe it's just down to me waiting for it to call me to it. I'm glad I waited.

I thought this was, I dont know actually. I didnt really see how this story was going to play out. I knew what it was about but i didn't see how it would evolve into an actual story.
I've got to say, the end result: 😭😭😭

"If there's a clock ticking towards anything, it should be your happiness."

I don't know that I cant say much without spoiling it here but what I will say is that that title is so apt for this book.
yes it's her waking up in the future, 5 years from the day but it's also so much more. Its....ahh!!!....I don't even know how to word it.
It's that, it's the vision. But it's also the growth Dannie goes through. It's about the friendship between her and Bella. It's the way you can plan shit down to a T but life will happen. Its growth, its pain, its love, its realization, it's so, so much.
I loved this story and I'm so glad I read it.

It's short and quick but it packed a punch for me and I ended up crying towards the end because 💔
But augh!!!! I liked it so much!

"I love you, but I'm sick of being the person who fits in your life but not your...fuck it, your heart."

ahhhh!!!!!
honestly, i didn't do that great of a job on here explaining why i loved it so much but just know that i did.
RS has a way with her words....and i wouldn't even say that. its more like she knows how to take a story and make it so much more than you could ever expect.
i am forever reading whatever she puts out there in the universe.

love, love, LOVED this story!

jump over for spoilers
kthxbyyee!

Dannie is 28, on track and headed to her dream job interview. Afterward she is meeting with David to celebrate where she knows he will be proposing; he does.
They go back to their place, they're going to celebrate by ordering thai food but she passes out. She wakes up in another world, in another room with another ring on her hand and another man, Aaron. She has no idea wtf is happening but she ends up sleeping with him....then she wakes up right before midnight back in NYC with David.
This little vision or dream or whatever fucks her up.
Here she was on track and now it's all a mess.

Turns out shes planned everything down to a T with David. get the jobs, get the dream apt, get married, live the life except it's now 4.5 years later and they're only still engaged.

You meet Bella and they couldn't be more different from each other. Shes a total free spirit.
Bells tells Dannie about her new boyfriend Greg and how this one is for reals for reals. Dannie blows it off but they agree to have a dinner and meet.
They go to dinner and low and behold who is Greg? Aaron!
His name is Aaron Greg. He just goes by Greg.
Dannie is all wtf, feigns sickness and they leave.

They end up going to I forget where for a holiday and Bella of course goes with Aaron (er Greg. Dannie is the only one that calls him Aaron).
There Bella tells Dan she might be pregnant and they take a test which comes out positive. Its soon but they're happy.

That vision she had was so powerful that it impacted her life and now she realizes that in order to prevent what she saw happening, she needs to marry David asap. So they agree, December 15 is their wedding. Except she keeps not prioritizing it.

It turns out that Bella isn't pregnant. She actually has ovarian cancer. It shares a lot of the symptoms that you'd get with a pregnancy.

I'll make it short a bit here, in the end, Bella passes away. And even though it was a short time, Aaron proposed to her except now Dannie is wearing the ring for her since she really couldn't.

With everything going on with Bella, Dannie asks David to postpone the wedding once again. But this time hes had enough so he calls it on their relationship. (You learn that the night they met, she was actually trying to hook up with his friend (her coworker) Adam, but he suggested that they date instead. You basically learn that she did love David but she wasnt IN love with him....). So she moves out with Bella. And shes there with her until she dies.

Bella is a true free spirit. Always starting things but according to Dannie, never finishing them and prior to her getting sick, she bought an apt and she was going to remodel it even though she had her own amazing place. Dannie tried to talk her out of it because that apt was the one Dannie woke up to Aaron in. So she cant even fathom how she would even begin to betray her like that.
It turns out Bella bought it for Dannie to live in. She knew David and her were never going to work out.
She knew she wasnt in love with him
But more than that, she wanted Dannie to have that place so that once she passed, Dannie would have a place that reminded her of Bella, of their friendship and their love. A cocoon of some sort.

So....Bella passes away, her parents plan this big ol' funeral thats very unbella like so Aaron and Dannie decide to hold something to more intimate.
Friends show up, they pay respects and in the end once everyone leaves, Dannie and Aaron leave together to her place. They arrive, she passes out and the vision starts replaying.
She wakes up, in the exact same dress, freaks out, he feeds her and then they sleep together.
I guess it's more so like a way for them to grieve? (I'm not here to judge).

What Serle did a good job with here is that after their "first time", Dannie wakes up before she can see what happens next in the dream. i guess once she wakes up she think that they were engaged and living together.
In real life, They sleep together, but he leaves right after.
He says they can meet up for lunches and stuff but she knows better. They are no longer in each others lives.

After a while, she leaves her apt and goes to a Deli around the block.
She runs into Bella's doctor.
And it ends with them eating and drinking coffee and just talking.

You're left with the impression that that's who she eventually ends up with.

I left out a lot and I'm sure I messed up the spoilers but that's the gist of it. Either way, read it. SO GOOD!!!!
