heartache is the worst affliction. it robs a person of rationality, of logic, of forethought and patience. it makes everything good painfully bright and magnifies the bad with an intensity that's difficult to tolerate.

SYNOPSIS
Talk about an embarrassing introduction. On her first day of law school, Kailyn ran - quite literally - into the actor she crushed on as a teenager, ending with him sprawled on top of her. Mortified to discover the Daxton Hughes was also a student in her class, her embarrassment over their meet-cute quickly turned into a friendship she never expected. Of course, she never saw his betrayal coming either...

Now, eight years later, Dax is in her office asking for legal advice. Despite her anger, Kailyn can't help feeling sorry for the devastated man who just became sole guardian to his thirteen-year-old sister. But when her boss gets wind of Kailyn's new celebrity client, there's even more at stake than Dax's custody issues: if she gets Dax to work at their firm, she'll be promoted to partner.

The more time Kailyn spends with Dax and his sister, the more she starts to feel like a family, and the more she realizes the chemistry they had all those years ago is as fresh as ever. But will they be able to forgive the mistakes of the past, or will one betrayal lead to another?

MY THOUGHTS
what a ride!
i did not expect any of that from this book.

i bought this one for my nook a while back. maybe even back when it came out solely only cause it was on sale and i liked the cover but i haven't really touched my nook until recently.
and sometime between then and a while back, i guess i requested the audio book from my library and i must have completely forgotten about it because when i got it i was like "WTF?"
i was kinda glad cause once again, i am over music and i can only re-listen to Disenchantment on Netflix for so long so i welcomed a new listen. (even though i am now back to listening to Disenchantment again.....and i think it'll be a while before i tire of it. lol).

THIS
BOOK!

i was not expecting any of that!
i was not expecting to be angry and in suspense for so long. although, if I'm being honest, i think that has to do with the fact that i found the spoiler once i got into the book and so i was just waiting for shit to hit the fan. OR maybe because its kinda obvious what it is but either way, whoa.

ya know what i liked about this book?
- its a cheesy love story to the max
- its cheesy without being cheesy over the top
- its more than a ditzy girl trying to get the guy (sorry that sounds dick-ish but its sorta the truth, no?) its not the worlds next best novel but it has depth to it.
it was nice to read about a woman who has goals and is doing something with herself. and is just as equal as the dude in the story. (but to be honest, even in the story she comes out in second place several times so.... good job but still kinda shitty).

i liked that Kailyn was also understanding. especially in areas where i would have blown my lid personally. i liked that she wasn't as women have been typically written in these kind of stories; she knew when she was in the wrong and accepted it and never tried to fault anyone else. she knew when to give other's space even if it was the last thing she wanted to do.
she was very understanding of every one's emotions and she knew how to react.
basically, i just love how she was written.

you do have to suspend some disbelief because we all know that as lawyers there are some lines that you cannot cross which they do but its whateves, the story is still cool. (lol, cool).

overall, glad i was able to get around to this one.
i recommend doing the audio/read along. i loved Dax's voice! haha.

anyway, jump on over for spoilers!

thanks for reading!

S P O I L E R S

kailyn is mad at dax because she had handed him her final assignment when they were in college and asked him to turn it in for her (her father had just recently had a heart attack). had he done that, she would have been top of the class.
however, he did not.
BUT, it turns out that he had actually handed them to Felix (his bffl) because he had to go to some study group thing so Felix was the one that actually screwed K over.

Dax's parents die in a car accident and in their will they stated that they want Emme to be taken care of by her brother, Dax. this does not sit well with their Aunt Linda who was supposedly going to be her legal guardian. previously, her sister, Dax & Emme's mother, had told her she would be the legal guardian...but they had just revised the will 6 months prior to their accident. they knew what they were doing.

Linda is mad and legally fights for custody but the only reason she wants custody is to steal Emme's money (she stands to inherit a shit load of money). Linda has a gambling problem and has actually borrowed several thousands from her sister and husband through out the years. her plan was to get Emme, ship her ass to private school in San Fran and then go gamble it all in Vegas. lol.

there is also a scene where she plants a vodka bottle in Emme's locker to make it seem like she was sneaking in shots while at a school dance.....all just to make Dax look bad so that she could use that against him to gain custody.

K works at a law firm and is getting ready to be a partner when her boss tells her that if she can bring Dax over (he is also a lawyer elsewhere), she'll make her a partner. of course she says yes. she does hate him after all so how hard can it be.

except that since Linda is suing for custody, K needs to be E's conservator.
and because she is spending more and more time with them, her and Dax end up falling in love but like because its this kind of story, you know they deny it for a while.

eventually she realizes that she a) she needs to be honest with Dax about the "deal" and b) that she doesn't even want to be a partner. she wants to do family law.
but of course he finds out about it before she has a chance to explain.
he gets pissed, calls everything off and starts acting like the professional he should have been in the first place and they stay that way until the night of Em's dance thing or whatever the fuck when K overhears AND RECORDS Linda talking to someone on the phone about how she cant wait to gain custody and ship Em's ass off to San Fran.oh! and how the vodka in the locker thing was such a genius idea!  K records all this on her phone.
(K also goes through her computer and sees all the emails and prints them as evidence).
she tells Dax that they need to talk, he acts like a dick, they talk, they confront Linda, she drops the lawsuit and they end up together.

it ends with K having the best 30th BDAY party any human can ever have.
(dax used to be a child star. the main star of K's favorite show growing up. for her day, he rented a restaurant, decorated it with crap from the show and brought out the original cast)

and that's it.
