My first instinct is to refute her, but shutting someone else's feelings down doesn't make them go away.

His opinion of me is tainted by prejudice even before my arrival at his grandmother’s estate, and my first impression of him is just as abysmal.

His arrogance and icy demeanor make it clear that he’s the type of man who’s best handled at a distance.

Fortunately, space shouldn’t be an issue inside this Gilded Age mansion and its lush gardens. If I stick with the servants and he keeps to his sailboat and vintage Porsche, we should hardly cross paths at all. Unfortunately, at Rosethorn, I find that all roads eventually lead to Nicholas Hunt.

Sparks fly as we spar at the dinner table. Fighting words are flung in the shadows of the palatial halls.

We hang suspended in our hatred of one another, painfully oblivious to the heat and tension that build with every moment we’re left alone. We’re liable to kill one another, I think…right up until my eyes land on his lips and a new feeling grips hold of me: lust.

What’s worse?
He knows it.

They say you should keep your enemies close, but when Nicholas tightens his grip on my waist and draws me near, I’m not sure if it’s out of loathing or love.

One thing’s for sure—I intend to find out.

THOUGHTS
another RS grey for the books.
(the "i read another one of her books" books so to speak)

this one was okay. it wasnt bad but its not a fave of mine.
i feel like its missing a little bit of spice or something. idk.
im glad i read it before my unlimited kindle expires and i might try to get another one in but as far as this one goes: a) the woman on the cover is gorgeous!!!! b) the story was good but it definitely lacks i think the usual RS Grey vibe that i've come to know.
it all happens fast, too. if that makes any sense.
like one minute: grrrrr and then the next *kissing noises*
i don't know....there's just too many questions as far as why her? just because of the other lady in the home? maybe i'm just over the poor girl meeting a rich handsome dude trope? idk
....either way, i still prefer this one over make me bad. gah.

anyway, so yea.

i don't really have much else to say, i gotta get to work

thx for reading!
jump over for spoilers

SPOILERS

Maren goes to work for Cornelia for no other reason than Cornelia thought good of her and took her with her to work as her companion.
Nicholas hates that Maren is there because with those good looks, theres no way that someone that good looking can be an honest person.
he's coming off the high of obliterating another ex employee who is trying to make money off of them in the tabloids.

Nick (because im not writing out Nicholas) goes after her 3 times to tell her that she needs to stop mooching off of Cornelia but in the short end of things she basically tells him to fuck off.

in the end, it takes a trip to the beach and seeing Maren in a bikini that drives him over the edge. As Barrett (a dude who's shown interest in her) offers to take her home, Nick says hell no and takes her instead.
he lets her drive his car, she does a bad job, they pull over and he's on her like butter on pancakes.

she fights it and in the end, she finally decides to leave Rosethorn to grow up.
she goes to New York, she finds Nick and asks for his help in expunging her record (she grew up in a foster home with Ariana and she was the "bad" seed. they went to a party that got raided and she took the fault for Ariana when she was caught with her backpack full of drugs.....Maren took the fall for her so that she wouldn't be kicked out of the foster home she was in. )

so she gets to new york and gives Nick a box and in it are all the paychecks that she got from working at Rosethorn. she never cashed them.
she instead uses them to expunge her record.

the epilogue takes place 10 years later.
she and nick are married and have adopted 2 boys.
they're celebrating their 10 year anniversary and she is finally pregnant with a baby (it had been hard for them)

she attended Julliard, graduated in i forgot what and her and Nick started a foundation of some sort.

and das it.
