my husbands wife // jane corry

published: 2017

When young lawyer Lily marries Ed, she’s determined to make a fresh start and leave the secrets of the past behind. But then she takes on her first murder case and meets Joe, a convicted murderer to whom Lily is strangely drawn—and for whom she will soon be willing to risk almost anything.

But Lily is not the only one with secrets. Her next-door neighbor Carla may be only nine, but she has already learned that secrets are powerful things. That they can get her whatever she wants.

When Lily finds Carla on her doorstep twelve years later, a chain of events is set in motion that can end only one way.

MY THOUGHTS
SHORT VERSION:
UGH THIS BOOK
fuck this book.

LONG VERSION
i don't know.

don't
know.

a lot of nothing happens.
it's just a long ass, slow ass book that could have been good had it had more UMPH, more movement, less bullshit and more anything but slowness!

then 12 years later....(the second half of the book not my lateness in writing this post lol.)

and stiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiillllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll nothing happens.
and then "it" happens. (and honestly, the it is that Ed is dead but you know that at the very beginning of the book.)
and then lily
doesn't
shut
the
fuck
up
!!!!!!!!!

and that's it.

slow, slow, eh, slow, slow, slow, slow, 12 years later, slow, slow, ooh!, slow, slow, slow, oh shit!, slow, slow, slow, slow, lily doesn't shut up. slow, slow. the end.
that's the damn book!

i got through this as an audio book so i can't even say how long the book is physically but i do know that had i read it, i would have DNF'd it before i even got to the 2nd half. honestly, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm over Pandora at the moment, i probably would have DNF'd the audio book as well. but i told myself that i wasn't really losing anything because its a free audio book and what else am i going to listen to?

it is too damn long to get what the story gives you.
too damn long to connect everything.
too damn long to see what it is in the all-ness of it and even if it was "good" it wasn't worth the journey to me.

i read an earlier review that said they didn't care for lily because she tries to come off as the victim when she's clearly an "unknowingly" manipulator  ...and i agree. she got off on her morals and what she thought was right vs what everyone in the world KNOWS is right.
she bent things to work for her.  for her sake and sanity.

poor lily.
puh-lease.
she manipulated things to work for her as best as she could when and once she had the knowledge of things being that way.. she never had any remorse.

and as much as i hate carla, i think she's the one that got the shit end of the stick.
her mother fuuuuuuucked her up.
and just in general she was fucked from day one.
she learned things on her own in the wrong way because her mother was never there! and not only that but who was she to turn to? she learned to play the game at a very young age, she just, learned it wrong.
(that or Karma really fucked her up. and Karma is hella real when it wants to be. yes i know this is a fictional character!)

and if you read it and you well, make it to this scene with Ed & Carla....EEEEEWWWWWW right!? EEEEEWWWW. what a creepy plot twist.

and rupert or russell or whatever the fuck....really dude!?
ugh.
(honestly, i wrote this a bit after i finished the book but its been so long now that i dont even remember who rupert or russell is. let  me see if i can find out online. lol)
.
.
.
idk who the f that is.
but maybe i meant Joe? idk. either way, Joe. seriously dude. ya could've been big had you not been, ya know, a killer.
(also, fuck you lily for having evidence to free a man and then deciding "nah, ill give this one a go mahself" and then landing homeboy in jail over something HE DIDN'T DO!!!!!!!!!! knowing damn well, you really weren't shit as a lawyer.

anyway, yea. had this book been more straightforward, i might have loved it more. but its just TOO much that took TOO long that just didn't work for me in the end.
the only person that wins in this story is Lily. and honestly, she should have gone down herself.

spoilers below.

thanks for reading!

SPOILERS

ED & LILY & DANIEL & JOE

ed married Lily because he needed to get married before his 30th bday in order to receive his inheritance (she finds out from her sister in law after they marry).
he was to marry devita (i think that's how it's spelled) but she left him for another man.
and when he comes back from Italy from his honeymoon with lily, they both (D & E) "realized" they'd made a mistake but by then it was obvs too late.

lily grew up in a farm somewhere and when her parents couldn't conceive, they adopted Daniel. i think he came from some foster system deal.
Daniel was a HUGE DICK.
lily told him she wish he had never been born when she was upset at him because he had told their mother that their father was having an affair and showed no remorse while doing so. so he committed suicide and she found him hanging in the shed where they kept his horse, holding her favorite doll as a way to make sure she was there with him in the end while she was on a date.

Daniel was attached to lily because they started messing around. since they weren't really blood related they "okay'd" it themselves. so they started dating and their parents started noticing it and telling lily that she should know better. . (throughout the story, lily keeps talking about how she could never tell Ed her secret. ....this was the secret).

because she feels guilty in regards to Daniel, she decides to become a lawyer to help all those that are wrongly accused.

her first case is Joe.
he is in jail because he is accused of killing his girlfriend in the shower.
he has decided to finally appeal the ruling (or whateverthefuh its called) and he is looking for the perfect lawyer.
he finds that in lily.
blah
blah
blah
he is re-tried and found not guilty.
this makes lily one of the best lawyers out there.
her and tony.

Joe was not innocent. he just needed someone dumb enough and easy to manipulate so that he could feed them the information and win the case easily. this was lily.
he was also the one that killed Daniel's horse and sent her those threatening letters and all the calls and he was just a dick.

CARLA AND HER MOM

down from lily and eds, Carla lives with her mother.
to cut to the chase, Carla ends up staying with lily and ed when her mom has to work on the weekends.
she ain't working. she's hooking up with Larry.

while Carla stays with ed and lily, she becomes a muse to ed (he's an "artist") and eventually, hits it big with a painting of her. and he hasn't been successful since. and doesn't once again until she comes back into his life 15 years later.

anyway back to Larry and momma.
Larry, the guy sleeping with Carla's mom, is actually tony. tony, the guy who works with lily.
the night they win the case with Joe is when this happens.
and the bitch is like....leave her or ima tell yo wife.
like she's not lying to her husband. fuck this bitch.
and it turns out that she up and ruined their lives when she intended to NEVER say anything. she was just upset at the moment she said it.

this caused momma and Carla to go back to Italy since Tony/Larry was no longer going to pay the rent. also because Carla outed him when she caught him with another woman and well that added to momma's heart break.

12 years later.

lily and ed have a kid.
she's a top notch lawyer.

uhm...then Carla comes into their lives again.
Carla decided that she wanted to get some sort of revenge.....

so she gets some sort of scholarship and goes back to London or England or whatever and she goes to Eds gallery. she learned that he sold her painting for a "shit load of money" and so now she wants a cut.

she's staying at a hostel that catches fire. probably because of her (it comes back inconclusive since a lot of people admitted to smoking, while others also said no) so she ends up staying with lily and ed.

lily and Ed's kid was born with asperger's. and because they couldn't handle it, they left Tom (i think that's his name) with her parents so they could watch him during the week and go to a proper school out there. they were weekend parents.

Carla ends up interning at lily's job.

because Carla was a stupid little kid, blinded by revenge for her mother and thought that they had a shit load of money, her plan was to steal ed from lily.
and so she does.
she ends up breaking them up and ed and Carla get married and eventually have a baby girl.

the night he was killed, it was Carla who did it.
she was tired of the controlling obsessive person he because and she killed him. blinded by fury, she did it.

she was cleared of that case and it was lily that represented her.
and here is another case where she had evidence to convict the person but she didn't use them.

all in all, Joe was the one that kept sending lily all the evidence for all her cases.
he was guilty of killing his girlfriend. but perfect timing was on his side because the way he did it was the perfect way since a lot of people were claiming faulty water heaters that the company kept ignoring so it was super easy to blame it on that.

the night that Carla killed ed, he was there. he was there to hurt Carla for hurting lily.
Joe was IN LOVE with lily.
the night that she caught Larry (tony) and Carla's mom, she had slept with Joe.
chances are VERY HIGH that Joe is the father of her son and not Ed.

they go to trial again for idk what and this time Carla does get convicted as well as Joe.
if i remember, he set it up to say that he killed ed for her because she had hired him.

so this whole time....Carla was hoarding an anger because of and for her mom. and now here she is, motherless (her mom does pass away) married to an asshole with a child and before her mother died, tony actually left her a nice amount of money in his will before he passed.
so now her mother is enjoying life and shit (before she passes away) while Carla is fucking shit up in her life.

the purchaser of her painting: her estranged father.
and if i remember correctly, he also now takes care of her daughter.

and don't feel bad about the baby not growing up with her.
that's probably the best thing that could have happened to Poppy. she's away from her poisonous mother who tbh, was glad to be away from her.

.
.
.
.
see, it had potential to be REALLY GOOD. it was just toooooooo fucking long!
there's a lot of nothing in between all that.

  2. Just read a book for book club that had a pedophile in it and seemed to remember the last book having a bit of sibling incest (I need knew book club friends...ha). I looked up the last book to confirm my memory and found this review. YESSSSSSS! This was the book and it was awful. Thank you for giving me a huge laugh while refreshing my memory of a bad read.
