book: 2 of 12 (secretly aiming for 52 but happy with 30) of 2018

Timothy is a good kid who did a bad thing. Now he's under house arrest for a whole year. He has to check in weekly with a probation officer and a therapist, keep a journal, and stay out of trouble. But when he must take drastic measures to help his struggling family, staying out of trouble proves more difficult than Timothy ever thought it would be. Touching, funny, and always original, House Arrest is a novel in verse about a good boy's hard-won path to redemption.

MY THOUGHTS

this book!
all the feels!

i bought this book a while ago and only read it because i'm really trying to read 52 books this year so i really needed to get something before Sunday came around and the other book i got at the library sucked.
and i lucked out because this is a really short book.

anyway.
this book!
i think it helped that its not in your regular format.

Timothy is under house arrest and has to keep a journal to comply with his house arrest.
he has to write in it and his parole officer and therapist get to look into it.
so the whole book is just written in very short sentences.
kinda like this.
so it makes the book go fast.
its just his thoughts.
on certain things.
and then it's onto the next entry.
...so that helped me out.

this book makes you feel all sorts of things.
it mostly broke my heart a lot because he is dealing with heavy adult stuff.
the things that are troubling him shouldn't even be in his field of worries.
he's only 12 at the beginning of the book. he should be out having fun with his friends or doing dumb kid shit.
not worrying about how him and his mother are going to move forward
or how he can help with his brother.
or how they can survive without the help of his father (sorry bit of a spoiler but just a tiiiny one.)
and it shows you just how much more kids understand than we ever give them credit for.

i really liked this story given how short it was.
i think the only thing that maybe bugged me a little was the end.
like literally the very last line.
UGH.
WHY!!!?
i want to know what happens after.

and the more i think about it, maybe everything that happens when shit really hits the fan towards the end kinda bugs me because it was a little bit too far fetched (at least to me it was).

but overall, if you want a quick read, i definitely recommend this book.

and if by any chance you read the book (or the spoilers) and are looking for more info on what his little brother has, Kierra is pretty good at covering that topic since she herself is going through the same-ish thing with her daughter.

as always, jump on over for spoilers.
(ps: i have no idea why the heck the font is all over the place. ugh!)

thanks for reading!

SPOILERS

Timothy is under house arrest because he stole a wallet.

his brother has a trach, meaning he has a hole on his neck to help him breathe.
and so he needs all sorts of medicines just to keep him alive.

in a desperate moment, he took the wallet and bought his brother medicine.

because he's just a kid, he got house arrest for a year instead of going to juvie.
and one of his "punishments" was to keep a journal to express his feelings.
at first he hates the idea of it but it eventually grows on him.

their father left them so now it falls on his mother.
and him.
and their sometimes day nurse Marisol.

of course, his mother can only do so much and she's there all the time but she's also always at work so a lot of the work falls on him too.

when he goes to therapy, if he talks about his feelings, Mrs. B will let him use the computer so he eventually starts researching doctors that can help him with his brothers trach surgery.

eventually he finds a doctor that can help him but he lucks out. the doctor never replies to him.

because of everything going on and because his mother lost her job, they sell their home and move into an apartment.

mom gets back on her feet, they get rid of the horrible day nurse that had replaced Marisol and he decides to enter this charity thing at his school where families raise money for those in need.

for the longest time, he is against it but finally gives in.
he does the fundraiser, gives his speech and raises over $15,000!!!!! to help out with his brother.

THEN, mom leaves one day REAL QUICK to go pick up her laptop from work so she can work from home and this is when shit hits the fan.

Liam is blue. like matte picture paper texture looking turning bluer by the moment blue.

he calls the ambulance but they take FOREVER so he runs to Jose's house (Jose is basically his best friend. his mother has taken him into their home whenever he needed an escape and whenever he couldn't be with his mom because Liam was in the hospital.....Jose and his father are fixing up this shell of a car that by this point is up and running) and takes Turtle (he named it that at the beginning of all of this).
THIS KID IS 13 YEARS OLD, HAS NEVER DRIVEN IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE and yet stole the car and took his baby brother WHO WAS ON THE VERGE OF DYING to the hospital (a little far fetched but fuck it, ill take it)

5 hit and run cases
5 abandonment hit and run cases
a stolen car
(and a bunch of other shit)
just a few shy weeks of getting out of house arrest, and he lands in juvie.

but he saves his brother.

and the doctor FINALLY responded.
and they will run tests on Liam to make sure he can handle it all.
his brother might finally get "fixed".

and then it ends with a phone call.
his father trying to talk to him while he is in juvie.

THAT'S IT!
WHO KNOWS WHAT THE FRICK THEY TALKED ABOUT OR IF THEY EVEN TALKED!!!!!!

and i mean, i left a few little things out but for the most part, this is all it.
