SYNOPSIS
Come on, Bayview, you know you've missed this.
A ton of copycat gossip apps have popped up since Simon died, but in the year since the Bayview four were cleared of his shocking death, no one's been able to fill the gossip void quite like he could. The problem is no one has the facts.
Until now.
This time it's not an app, though—it's a game.
Truth or Dare.
Phoebe's the first target. If you choose not to play, it's a truth. And hers is dark.
Then comes Maeve and she should know better—always choose the dare.
But by the time Knox is about to be tagged, things have gotten dangerous. The dares have become deadly, and if Maeve learned anything from Bronwyn last year, it's that they can't count on the police for help. Or protection.
Simon's gone, but someone's determined to keep his legacy at Bayview High alive. And this time, there's a whole new set of rules.
THOUGHTS
there's this thing in the Hispanic (for sure Mexican cause that's where I've seen it) culture where they grab an egg and rub it all over a person to rid of evil or bad. (in my case, I've seen it done for a house).
....what I'm trying to say is: someone needs to get a huge af egg and rub it all over Bayview because fuuuuuuuuuuuuuh.
how can shit hit the fan so bad twice in an 18 month period!?
Did there need to be a sequel?
from my POV, nah.
but it doesn't matter because it's not like i remember what I read originally anyway.
even after reading my DETAILED spoilers 😑 and others might be more of a fan than i am...but mostly just because there really didn't need to be.
everything was figured out and everyone had gone their own way, it would've been fine if everything had been left alone and everyone moved on living their happy little lives like they already had started to.
The game goes like this:
you pick a truth or a dare in a 24 hr period.
fail to reply or complete results in an automatic secret reveal.
of all the people that were hit up, 2 ignored and 3 picked dare.
only 1 of the secrets was legit, the other was dumb.
2 dares were stupid and 1 was well,.....well it was what it was.
I liked the book. and the story was cool but there were certain parts where I was over it and I wished this wasn't an almost 400 pg book.
especially when the damn kids had some sort of evidence or not even evidence but another look view into what happened and instead of doing something with it, they decided to hold it to themselves ALL BECAUSE GOD FORBID THEY SHOULD BE BANNED FROM HAVING THEIR PHONES ON THEM AT ALL TIMES WHILE IN SCHOOL!
ugh.
It had its good but it was also eh.
and while I usually loooove when sequels bring back old characters, I wasnt too crazy about it here.
Bronwyn and her bullshit with Yale was annoying; it's what you wanted, don't ruin it.
Bronwyn with Nate and will they, wont they....y'all fucking know you will so cut the annoying shit out.
(maybe I just didn't care for B)...it was just annoying when it came to her. it was too much.
its like it has all this new drama but its also trying to bring in drama from the past back.
move the fuck on.
and the end!!!!!! I don't want to say here because it's a bit spoilery but that's really when y'all unite?! after everything that went down and all the shit *YOU* caused! and this is when y'all team up?!
UGH!
all of me really hopes that while this does end a bit open ended, that it doesn't leak over into a third book! because at that point, everyone should just move out of Bayview and we should just blow up the town so that it never has to exist ever again.
anyway, it wasn't a bad read, I'm not mad I read it (even though that's literally the vibe that's coming off this). now i see why i walked away from it at B&N even though this was the only book i had gone in for.
it could've been shorter but it also could've not existed.
but yea.
anyway, jump over for spoilers.
Darkestmind is: Jared Jackson. wiiiiiith a little bit of help from Emma, Phoebe's sister. And their baby brother Owen.
It's a cluster fuck.
A while back, Emma used to date Derek but they broke up. Sometime after, Phoebe hooked up with her own sister's ex at a party.
That was the first secret. Phoebe sleeping with her sisters ex. and really the only shocking one. (the other secret was that Maeve never slept with Knox because he couldn't get hard. in reality it had only happened once and they realized they were better as friends.)
Then there were 2 dares:
Jules making out with Nate in front of Bronwyn and someone (most likely Sean) putting the mascots head on the chicken in the restaurant in town. The third dare was for Brandon Weber. And his dare was to jump to the bottom or someshit of the empty building structure that was behind the mall.
Except someone rigged it so that instead of jumping, Brandon fell to his death.
(That someone was Jared)
Long story long:
Brandon Weber is the reason that Emma & Phoebe's dad is dead.
There was a take your kid to work day and while they told Brandon not to touch shit, he did. He drove an i forgot what that managed to trap their father and in turn kill him.
In the settlement they kept Brandon's name out of it, essentially showing Brandon that his actions don't have any type of consequences.
Emma found this out, got pissed, wanted payback so she went into the web-pages that Simon used to go on. There she found Jared and they bonded over their pain, planned revenge to hurt Brandon just enough that he'd never play football.
To make it a believable game Emma gives up her sisters secret (it turns out that Derek told Emma the day after it happened so she always knew) but of course, she never told Jared she was Emma. she told him that she was actually Phoebe. pinning everything on her own sister.
But by the first go, she regrets is and tells him she's out.
In the end, the point was to make the truths so harsh that Brandon would take the dare. Which he did.
Jared had gone to the abandoned building and loosened the whatcamacallits so that Brandon would fall to his death.
By then Emma was completely out.
Since she's gone missing (even though she had told him that she was out since the very beginning), Jared is now looking for phoebe to complete his end of their deal.
Of course Phoebe doesn't know so he does his thing on his own.
The reason that Jared is pissed is:
-His brother was thrown in jail thanks to Eli (Eli represented the first Bayview gang) because the main police officer and Jared's brother were implanting false drug charges on other people.
-his father is sick
-his mother committed suicide.
-he was fired from his job for I forgot what and i think he was in construction.
The night of Eli & Ashton's wedding (Ashton is Addy's sister. Addy is from book 1. she was the beauty queen who almost got chocked out by her ex boyfriend) Jared goes to their rehearsal wedding venue and throws a homemade bomb under the building. (By this point, Maeve & Knox know what's up). Maeve & Knox see this, manage to get the bomb out and Knox throws it into the empty forest behind them. But of course at that moment, Bronwyn & Nate are having a moment. They manage to get away but Nate gets a bit fucked up. he threw himself on top of B and it was mostly his arm that got chunks of the bomb.
By this point, Emma has drank herself unconscious so she's in the hospital and phoebe is there with her when she steps out of the room and learns what happened at the restaurant.
The cops catch Jared quickly. Jared had been writing death threats and sending them to Eli's job so Eli had security on the premises he just no idea they would need them underneath the premise. (Knox was the one that made the connection that Jared was both the one harassing phoebe and Eli because of his handwritten notes), He confesses to everything but of course brings Emma into it, well, Pheebs since Emma is a bitch and threw her on sister in the shit pond. luckily Maeve & Knox have it on video record showing Jared throwing the backpack with the homemade bomb under the building.
In the end, Emma gets a lawyer and she retells him everything. Especially that they stopped talking February 19th.
Buuuut records show otherwise.
Someone kept talking to Jared pretending to be Emma pretending to be Phoebe. Their mom suggests that it could've just been Jared pretending to be phoebe and phoebe agrees because they style of writing is not Emma at all. too many exclamation points and excitement.
And then they notice the word bazaar.
That's when they both realize that it was actually their brother continuing Emma's bullshit with Jared.
Then and there they both agree to frame it all on Jared and faking it on his own after Emma calls it quits by looking at each other and acknowledging that they cannot bring Owen into this.
And that's it.
I left a lot out but yea.
