Everything talks. You just have to be willing to listen.

SYNOPSIS
S.T., a domesticated crow, is a bird of simple pleasures: hanging out with his owner Big Jim, trading insults with Seattle's wild crows (those idiots), and enjoying the finest food humankind has to offer: Cheetos ®.

Then Big Jim's eyeball falls out of his head, and S.T. starts to feel like something isn't quite right. His most tried-and-true remedies--from beak-delivered beer to the slobbering affection of Big Jim's loyal but dim-witted dog, Dennis--fail to cure Big Jim's debilitating malady. S.T. is left with no choice but to abandon his old life and venture out into a wild and frightening new world with his trusty steed Dennis, where he discovers that the neighbors are devouring each other and the local wildlife is abuzz with rumors of dangerous new predators roaming Seattle. Humanity's extinction has seemingly arrived, and the only one determined to save it is a foul-mouthed crow whose knowledge of the world around him comes from his TV-watching education.

Hollow Kingdom is a humorous, big-hearted, and boundlessly beautiful romp through the apocalypse and the world that comes after, where even a cowardly crow can become a hero.

THOUGHTS
ahhh!!!!!
i'm so glad that i came back to this story because i ended up loving it so freaking much!

originally i gave it up because i just couldn't handle the fact that it was about animals being left alone to fend for themselves on earth while humans went extinct.
WHO WAS GOING TO TAKE CARE OF THEM!?😫😢😭
(yes i am VERY aware this is a made up story)
(and yes i know animals have being doing their own thing since before we all came along and fucked it all up.) but just who i am as a human couldn't read this without being sad. i made it to page 35 before i gave it up. but then i had the idea to try it as an audiobook because I knew I could sorta handle that. (I also skipped to the back and got 1 spoiler and assumed it happened one way when in reality it happened another so that's another reason I wanted to skip because i couldn't handle it cause it made me sad)

OMG I'M SO GLAD THAT I GAVE IT THE AUDIOBOOK TRY!

i ended up really, really liking this story.
not everyone makes it but man did they put up a fght. and i was able to make it without falling apart so that's a win!

i loved ST & Dennis so much.
I loved how this story is told from a crows point of view but speaks volumes about the human race.
it's also told from the views of other animals. That damn cat ♡.
and the point of the story, ST's mission and the rest that follows, it's just the best! I'm honestly still shocked at how good this book is. I'm so glad I came back to it.
and it takes place in Seattle, so while i'm not a native and i've only been once, it was pretty cool to be able to pinpoint some places.

such a good book. good lessons. amazing truth spoken.
it's funny, it's truthful, it's wise.
I basically highlighted everything.

if you like post apocalyptic (or is this dystopian?) or whatever, i definitely recommend this book. just overall, pick this book up.

jump over for some spoilers.
thanks for reading!
S P O I L E R S
ST lives with Big Jim & Dennis in Seattle.
They're in their yard one day when Jim's eye falls out. Hes all wtf, goes to his basement and stays there.

Its not until ST decides to go to Walgreens for medicine that he realizes what happened to the humans but even then hes not completely aware.

Turns out that the human race did not evolve like it was supposed to so mother nature killed them off.
and even though they were zombies, instead of brains they wanted cellphones which is why after ST gives big Jim porn mags, and beer and cheetos nothing caught his attention like the ping of his cellphone once ST turns it on.
Since big jim heard the phone, he ran upstairs which means that Dennis and ST now have to find a new place to live.

LOL EVEN AS ZOMBIES WE STILL PREFER CELLPHONES TO BRAINS!!!!!!
(it wasnt til I wrote this that I got the joke. hahahaha)

It hits ST that there are more domestics that are locked up and he makes it his mission to release them.....but since he doesnt have opposable thumbs it's kinda hard.

In the end, 2 things:
1) ST reunites with his kind. And they do release domestics. With tricks but also with the help of a Orangutan and his family ♡
And because of Aura, Echo & Web (how animals communicate) word gets out all over the world that there are domestics that need help being freed.

2) the dead human zombies are evolving into weird bird, crow, who knows wtf things. And they're attacking the crows. and basically whoever is in their way. Dennis and ST are in the downtown area when they realize what's happening. By this point ST cant fly because he damaged his wing so Dennis hides him in a tub of coldstones ice cream and Dennis gets an iPad just in time to attract the human/bird hybrid mess thing.
He runs away and after dodging and avoiding he jumps into a lake which they follow into but since they cant swim, they all drown.
Hooray Dennis!!!!

Of course it could've  ended there BUT NO THEY HAVE TO FREAKING RIP YOUR HEART OUT!!!!!!
in the same scene all of two minutes later, Dennis notices a UPS truck and runs towards it. But of course its surrounded by the dead humans and so, RIP Dennis. :'(

The amount of respect that was paid to Dennis & ST was astounding.

Time passes and they come to ST telling him that they have something for him but it's a trek away.
He thinks that they've found another dog just like Dennis for him. Hes not ready and he doesnt want another Dennis but he'll go.

Only, it turns out its not another Dennis.
ITS A MOTHERFUCKING BABY!!!!!!!!!
of course that would be his baby. Hes the only one who has human experience.

AND JUST WHEN YOU THINK THAT'S IT!!!!!
it turns out the entire story you just read was actually ST telling to baby Dee (named after Dennis)! So who knows how long he's had the baby for (or what it even means for that matter!)

CUE ALL OF THE TEARS!!!!!

of course, theres a lot I left out but even if you read all this, PICK THIS BOOK UP!!!!!
