SYNOPSIS
The secrets lurking in a rundown roadside motel ensnare a young woman, just as they did her aunt thirty-five years before, in this new atmospheric suspense novel from the national bestselling and award-winning author of The Broken Girls.

Upstate NY, 1982. Every small town like Fell, New York, has a place like the Sun Down Motel. Some customers are from out of town, passing through on their way to someplace better. Some are locals, trying to hide their secrets. Viv Delaney works as the night clerk to pay for her move to New York City. But something isn't right at the Sun Down, and before long she's determined to uncover all of the secrets hidden…

THOUGHTS
what in the fuck did i just listen to!?

this wasnt a bad read but for me it definitely falls under the "wtf!" umbrella.
i feel like there is A LOT going on here.
this was a ghost story...but also real life...but also....? i cant really say much because its kinda spoilery buuuut i guess i can say that you should definitely suspend disbelief. although, i didnt...i think at some point i was just like fuck it let see where this one goes.

when i first started it, i was super into it. i dont really like "scary" reads because im a little bitch and everything scares me but it had me hooked and i was super excited to read it. and then i kept going and i was like *insert wtf emoji* and then i finished it and i was truly left thinking what the fuck!

Its July August 2021 and I still believe this book makes no fucking sense. In order for this story to work, it HAAAAAAAAAAS to take place on some other dimension where we most def don't exist (duh!) because I just can't.

Its been a while so I feel like I can talk about what it's about to an extent.

Here's this creepy ass hotel where who even knows how many deaths have happened (I remember the 2), that's still open,  you have a whole ass human being missing from your town since the 1700's, who is well..., and half your town sees ghost while the other half just completely and blatantly ignores it! Its like they took paranorman and turned the movie into a book. they flipped the shit and now movies see it ain't so fun when they're not adapted properly.  😡
anyway, yeah. It just, it made no fucking sense.
Half the town is seeing ghosts and the other half is like "ah, fuck it. Ima just ignore it. let them have fun."
WHAT!?

I don't remember much, it has been a while, but I do remember finishing the book and thinking "what the fuck?"

anyway, jump over for some i made no sense spoilers.
😅 lol

thanks for reading!

SPOILERS

the killer was: Simon Hess. The traveling salesman.
he killed Betty because he loved her and he needed to make her understand.
but he killed everyone, dude. all the fucking women.

the kid...in the pool.
basically he had drowned when the hotel used to be the shit. so homie really was just stuck. no one told him how to cross to the other side.

and the missing aunt!?
the bitch was in the town the entire time. like since the day she left. since the fucking second she ran away basically (im making that up. she could have left for a couple of days or weeks or something if ya wanna get technical about it).
she was in cahoots with the cop lady over i think when they finally killed Simon or i forgot who...the cop just had to pretend she didnt know and pretend she did actually leave.

in the end the aunt comes back and picks homegirl up and i think the hotel finally just decides to give up on life and kills itself.

niece trick ends up dating that one dude in the book. i forot his name. the one who's dad killed everyone in his fam.

WAIT! I GOT MY NOTES!!! HERE ARE THE SPOILERS STRAIGHT THRU

Simon Hess killed all the ladies.
BETTY: because he loved her and wanted to make her see that but she was like nah.
CATHY: to see if he could.
VICTORIA: a mistake.
TRACY: because he could.
(i forgot who all these women are)

SIMON HESS IS CALLUMS GRANDPA!!!!!!!!!!!

simon hess killed all the ladies. he kept going back to the hotel because that's where betty was at (her spirit) (i think she was the one haunting the hotel).
he "loved" her. he had to make her see. i guess thats why he kept going back.

simon hess was the one that Carly and Nick found in the car (who tf is nick?! who tf is callum?)

anyway, viv killed simon.
marnie (the photographer) walks in and helps her.
alma (the cop) shows up (after viv calls her & realized her mistake (idk what mistake its been too long)) and the 3 of them planned what to do.
then viv ran away.
except that bitch was in the town the entire time.

and that was it. i think.

bah this book!
