SYNOPSIS
Two women. Two Flights. One last chance to disappear.

Claire Cook has a perfect life. Married to the scion of a political dynasty, with a Manhattan townhouse and a staff of ten, her surroundings are elegant, her days flawlessly choreographed, and her future auspicious. But behind closed doors, nothing is quite as it seems. That perfect husband has a temper that burns as bright as his promising political career, and he's not above using his staff to track Claire's every move, making sure she's living up to his impossible standards. But what he doesn't know is that Claire has worked for months on a plan to vanish.

A chance meeting in an airport bar brings her together with a woman whose circumstances seem equally dire. Together they make a last-minute decision to switch tickets ― Claire taking Eva's flight to Oakland, and Eva traveling to Puerto Rico as Claire. They believe the swap will give each of them the head start they need to begin again somewhere far away. But when the flight to Puerto Rico goes down, Claire realizes it's no longer a head start but a new life. Cut off, out of options, with the news of her death about to explode in the media, Claire will assume Eva's identity, and along with it, the secrets Eva fought so hard to keep hidden.

The Last Flight is the story of two women ― both alone, both scared ― and one agonizing decision that will change the trajectory of both of their lives.

THOUGHTS
Oooooohhhhh, honey!

I was thisclose to missing out on this book. I was going to skip June's BOTM selection but at the last minute decided to give this one ago. And lately I've seen it all over bookstagram receiving all sorts of praise so I took it with me while I went on an overnight camping trip. It was calling me to pick it up and I'm so glad that I did.

this is Inception in book form. I won't say much up here because I don't wana spoil it for anyone who wants to read it. But I guess what I'm trying to say is: remember how in Inception, if the thingy was spinning it was all a dream? Or some shit like that? and even though we knew that, we were somehow still not sure of what had happened? Like was it a dream or real or wtf happened? That's this book.
I'm still a bit unclear at that epilogue. (Gah! It sucks not being able to say it up here!!!!) what truly happens? did you read this!? lets talk because i need to know!

anyway, this book. i can see the hype. completely see the hype. the other night i caught myself thinking about this book and how i was sad that it was over. i want to re-read this one again. eventually i will i think.

usually in stories like these with a connection like that i kinda get thrown off by it because it seems so far fetched and kinda lazy but in this case, i didnt mind it at all. i think i would have preferred for it not to have happened but it doesn't bother me.
i think the thing i like about this book is that it fucks with you. i dont want to mention it here because i don't want to spoil it but i do like that you can't really rely on your narrator. and then there's the whole inception thing that im getting from it that im like WOAH!

but yeah, anyway, i really liked this book. and im so glad i didnt skip it.

jump over for spoilers!
thanks for reading!

Claire wants to leave Rory now that she has reconnected with Petra and has her help with escaping. the plan was that Claire was going to go to a fundraiser in Chicago which she was going to attend and then escape after. she had sent herself her new fake identity, $40k and other paperwork to the hotel which she was going to collect and use afterwards to leave towards to Canada.
except at the last minute, Rory changed the plans and sent her to.....i forgot lol. Puerto Rico i think.
so now Rory is in on her plans, he has collected her package and of course he flips his lid.
she leaves to the airport where she is sitting at a table panicking (she had called Petra and told her everything and was going to run away to her place) when Eva comes into her life.
Eva pretends to be on the run because of her husbands death so she puts on a show and works Claire and in the end they swap tickets.

once Claire lands, the news are everywhere that her plane has crashed.

she takes off to Eva's place and starts putting things together.
there she learns that Eva was not who she said she was.

the very next morning she goes to get coffee and ends up making friends with the lady who works there (sorry, like always, i forgot her name) and that woman ends up getting her a job catering.
the day that Claire finally decides to leave, coffee home girl gets her a catering gig. it was something with sports and she notices a couple where the guy is mistreating his girlfriend. things happen and he ends up manhandling her and Claire intervenes. of course by then its already being recorded and she needs to get away since its only a matter of time before Rory sees the video.
sure 'nuff, she gets an email from Danielle, Rory's assistant, that she knows that she is alive and needs to get in touch with her as soon as possible.

the plan was for her to take off in eva's car but when she goes into the garage, its not there. so she takes off walking and ends up in a motel somewhere. there agent Castro ends up finding her and asking her about Eva.

in the end, Claire ends up exposing her husband for being an abusive husband on live television. and also manages to expose him for killing Maggie, an ex girlfriend that he killed because she wasnt cooperative. that along with the collaboration from Charlie (another woman he dated) and the confession that Danielle managed to record managed to land him jail.

in the end, she ends up moving to Berkeley with the help of coffee home girl and decides to start her life anew.
(before she left her home, she copied all of Rory's files from his secret computer and had evidence in there too i guess....)

now for EVA!

eva was a drug dealer.
she used to go to Berkeley and she was very smart when it came to chemistry. she started dating this dude named Wade who eventually had her making drugs.
they get caught, only she gets blamed and gets kicked out.
that's when Dex finds her and tells her that Fish, his boss wants to hire her to make drugs. since she's very good at what she does, she can make a batch for him and keep half and the sales from her half.
she's been doing this for years but she's finally over it.

she's never met Fish. her only contact is Dex but she's never been one to ask questions.

eventually she has a temporary neighbor, Liz, who worms her way into her heart. Eva's mom was a drug addict and when she ended up pregnant, they placed Eva for adoption so that has always hurt her. once Liz came along she kinda sees that she needs to leave.

so to make this short, Eva has a feeling that her time with Dex is up.
and she was supposed to make a sale with this lady who ended up being an addict.
she doesnt sell her anything and there is no exchange of money so its not like she can get in trouble. but she sees the woman exchanging information with a cop.
so she knows the end is near.

she calls Dex and tells him and he tells her to take a break that he'll take care of it.
so she does and this is when she starts getting close to Liz. Eventually Dex tells her she's back on but she wants out.

the cop ends up finding her and he tells her that she needs to help them in order for her to avoid jail time. she thinks she'll be okay if she gets into witness protection but of course they dont prove that to her.
so she decides to run away. but first, she needs to stop by and tell Liz the truth in New Jersey. she does.
and then her daughter shows up.
and they talk about her job.
and Eva pays attention.

and it turns out that Liz's daughter is Danielle.
and Danielle had a feeling that Claire was getting ready to run away so she's worried.

that's when Eva plots to run into her.

she tells Liz that she will go home and tell the cop the truth.
but she switches her airport at the last minute to plan a switch with Claire.

so in the end, I THINK Eva does die in the plane crash.
and the only reason i say I THINK is because in a scene with claire, she mentions seeing Eva from the corner of the screen on TV. sooo.....idk.

obvs there is A LOT of things i left out...i think because the timelines cross and bob in and out that makes it a bit harder but for the most part.....that was it.
